WWE News: Undertaker To Compete at WrestleMania XXIX

According to PWInsider.com, The Undertaker has contacted WWE and said he wants to compete at WrestleMania XXIX, and has pitched a potential opponent.

News had been going around, earlier this year, stating that The Undertaker was really banged up, and could potentially miss WrestleMania, but it is now looking more and more like he will be there.

Personally, I am torn on this news. On the one hand, I am a huge Undertaker fan. I watched as he made his debut as Kane the Undertaker, and I have become more focused on his streak than many of the other matches of the recent WrestleManias. WrestleMania would not be the same without him.

On the other hand, I know his career is not long for this world, even though he only competes once a year.

The streak has become such a huge spectacle that we now expect to see amazing matches when Undertaker is involved. The recent matches with Triple H and Shawn Michaels are considered the norm of what a streak match should be. Compare these matches to the ones with Jimmy Snuka, and Jake Roberts, the begining of the streak, and you will see there is no comparison.

If The Undertaker can compete at the caliber he has in the past WrestleManias, then I am all for him to be at the next one. However, if he is forcing himself to compete, thus the match suffers, then I would much rather see the deadman’s career rest in peace.

I want to see Taker at Mania again if he can compete, but I question what his options are. His best option story-wise would be Brock Lesnar, but reports have said that Taker doesn’t want to face Lesnar plus I’m not sure that Lesnar can be a safe enough wrestler to work with the aging Taker. The story would be incredible if it happened though. CM Punk’s name has been tossed around, and he would make a lot of sense; however, I don’t see why they would throw Punk out of the title picture so quickly. One option that has been completely ignored for the most part is the Rock which would be an incredible story build at least, but the Rock may be in the championship picture at that time.

Some outside shots are ones I’m more interested in. Sheamus is losing his spot at the top of SmackDown right now, and, while he’s a face, he would have a lot to prove in challenging Taker. For a guy who loves to fight, why not take up the ultimate fight if Taker will allow it (story-wise as I’m sure Taker would face Sheamus at Mania as he knows what they could do). The story wouldn’t be that great, but the match could be show-stealing.

Beyond that, the options are a bit sparse as Taker/Cena shouldn’t happen until next year and please no second Orton/Taker even if it would probably be good to great. I would love to see Daniel Bryan/Taker though Bryan would have to drop the comedy work quickly. I’d even consider Big Show with the way he’s wrestling right now though that would be a last minute option to me. Most other people aren’t ready i.e. Barrett, Ryback, Miz, etc.

Still whatever WWE decides it should be a great match, and I really hope to see Taker/Cena WM XXX.

I only ask that he faces a new opponent… No WM rematches, pls. I’d like to see CM Punk (Most likely of the ones I listed), Sheamus (Could happen, but not too sure), Daniel Bryan (Too tied down to Hell No & Kane to be the guy IMO), Wade Barrett (It’d be cool, but he’s chasing IC gold right now & I think he’s gonna win it), etc.

I’ve heard that he didn’t want to face Ryback or HHH, so we’ll see. I’d love to see him face Daniel Bryan as it would certainly make for a very good match. I wouldn’t be surprised if he faced CM Punk though, since he’s probably dropping the strap to The Rock at the Rumble and then ‘Mania will be the end of his quest for respect angle with him gaining Undertaker’s respect or something like that.

Good job on getting this up quickly.
