Layla has been WWE Divas Champion since she returned from injury at Extreme Rules 2012 and defeated Nikka Bella. Prior to the injury, Layla was famous for her “Lay Cool” gimmick with Michelle McCool. I thought Layla was a fantastic heel, but as a face I find her character to be boring. There may not be a lot of emphasis on the divas, but perhaps with a different champion, people will take notice. Therefore, I have come up with three better options for the WWE Divas Champion: Natalya, Eve and AJ.

Natalya

Natalya is the son of Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart so she grew up in a wrestling family. Natalya has played both the face and heel character, but most recently she has been the latter. Natalya works the heel character very well in her matches, is a well-trained wrestler and good worker for WWE. Also, her recent match with Funkadactyl Naomi at a live event impressed many within the organization. Natalya was Divas Champion in November 2010 and her “hart” is in wrestling and in WWE. I believe she deserves another run at the gold.

Eve

Eve is another WWE diva who deserves another run at the gold. Eve is a two time Divas Champion, but both reigns occurred while Eve was face. Eve receives a lot of heat from fans and appears on many backstage segments. Currently, she has been seen more backstage then in the ring. However, she is in a feud with the number one contender for the Divas Championship, Kaitlin. This could be a set up for a future championship reign for Eve. Finally, Eve has been involved in some projects outside of WWE. We all know WWE loves to promote its superstars in outside projects. Having the WWE Divas Champion on an NBC television show will bring even more attention to WWE.

AJ

Readers may question why I have AJ on this list, as she is the general manager of RAW. However, my argument begins with AJ being the WWE diva with the most airtime on RAW. In addition, AJ can use her GM power to grant herself a championship match. She could also use her power to make it unfair for her opponent. AJ debuted on the main roster in May 2011 and therefore, has only shown us a small glimpse of her wrestling ability. However, as a trained wrestler in New Jersey, AJ can reach the top of the stale divas’ division. I think it is only time until we see AJ as the WWE Divas Champion. Just prior to becoming RAW general manager, AJ was one of the most interesting, exciting and unpredictable characters in WWE. If WWE wants everyone to take the divas division seriously, and that is a big if, let AJ be the unpredictable AJ. Many more fans will take interest in AJ and the divas division if AJ reverts back to the character that made her popular.

What do you think? Who would be the best option right now for WWE Divas Champion?

Hi. My name is Adam and I'm from Oxford, Mississippi. I've grown up in this area my entire life. I went to the same schools from kindergarten to graduation, and I like it here. My interests include things from most areas of entertainment; sports, movies, TV, video games, etc etc, and, of course, wrestling. I'm actually fairly new to the wrestling world. My first episode of Raw was in August, shortly before Summer Slam. I couldn't tell you why I decided to start watching it. I just decided to sit down and check out Raw. I made sure to enter with the right mentality, reminding myself that it was supposed to be silly and a bit stupid at times. I gotta tell you, I was instantly hooked. I haven't missed a Raw or Smackdown since then. I'm the type of person that, when I get interested in something, I have to learn everything about it, and I went about devouring as much wrestling knowledge as I could find. It quickly escalated from knowing the terms "face" and "heel" to "marking out" and getting frustrated at the fact that they're never going to get Cena more over than he already is, I mean come on would the world have ended to give Ziggler the win on Raw? Who needs it more than he does?! *ahem* Excuse me, I'm still a bit frustrated at that, it seems. I love to write, especially when the things I write are of the opinionated variety. I hope you like my sample. The content of it isn't something no one hasn't examined, but I was more focusing on showing my writing style, I hope that's okay. I love wrestling. I got so hooked so quickly and haven't even thought of looking back. I hope you like what you see and I'd absolutely love to write for you guys. It sounds like it'd be a ton of fun.

  1. Layla’s not a bad champion, but the division is bit poorly. She also does come off as a bit generic. Still a solid in ring talent though.

Natalya, she really needs to be Divas champion again because she and Beth are the only talents that have proven they can make anyone in the division look good. Natalya is probably the best wrestler in the company. She also does a good job building her character despite no mic time. I’m not surprised that Naomi/Natalya got good reviews. Naomi is a great in ring talent who should really break out into the division soon.

Eve is a pretty clear choice. In fact, she probably should have been given the title earlier. Back around the time she dumped Zack Ryder, she was easily the biggest thing going for the Divas division. Now she’s still the biggest thing the division has when you don’t include AJ who is a bit preoccupied. She is a good in ring talent, somewhat underrated, and she is the best mic worker the division has again avoiding AJ. She would make a pretty clear champion even if the division couldn’t match up.

AJ is the best female competitor in WWE right now. She is great on the mic, massively over, and a really good wrestler when she gets the chance to show it. The problem is that she is too big for the division right now. As GM, she is busy, and she honestly is so much larger of a character than the rest of the division that she would make an almost too big champion. Sometime soon though, I’d love to see her as Divas champion.

Solid article, it’s a bit one dimensional, but the thought is solid.

  2. I haven’t really thought about the next Divas champion, and I don’t really have a problem with Layla. While she’s playing a generic female face, she’s still very solid in the ring. Looking at the list, where’s Kaitlyn? She’s an active Diva that’s slowly getting over, growing leaps and bounds in the ring (and is hot as hell!), whereas two of the Divas here are not so active. One hasn’t wrestled on TV, and I guess house show included, in over a month.

1.) Dotcom did an article over the social media feud between Kaitlyn and Natalya. While it’s nothing much, it is interesting they gave attention to that, shortly after the house show news on Naomi and Nattie tearing it up. Maybe Natalya will have a turnaround. I would hope so, Natalya does seem to have a hell of a time as a heel. Generally though, she seems to have fun. Bumping on her ass, talking smack to a Diva, being funny too. Such as her saying “I hate you!” I fancy her and Beth Phoenix as the two top in ring Divas in the company. Natalya has more of a profound technical wrestling game, and she and Layla could have a very nice, solid match if time was granted. If she were to be given the mic more, surely she’d be able to show off the personality she always exhibited while performing in the ring. Sadly that’s not the case, but someone who’s more lucky…

2.) While Eve’s activity in the Division isn’t high, unlike AJ, she at least wrestled a few weeks ago, in contrast to seemingly over a month. Eve has character, and that certainly helps in a division that lacks on it. So she’d make a good attention grabber as Divas champion. She’s pretty good in the ring, as she seems to have improved for the better part of a year. Also being more set as a heel, because at first, it wasn’t a good start. She’s already in what appears to be a 3 diva angle with her, Layla, and Kaitlyn. Seemingly taking form last week when she rose Kaitlyn and Layla’s hand in the air. She got some devious intentions, and it makes for at least, a story.

3.) One thing about AJ as Divas champion, is it could resemble a current example in Christopher Daniels and Kazarian as tag team champions. That being, the titles are just nice props for them. AJ in particular, is too big a character to try and give the title to. This is what separates Eve and her, because AJ got more character development, to the point that she went above being a wrestler, and is now an authority figure. Whereas Eve went as high up as just being an assistant. So by ranking, AJ’s on a higher playing field, which might be too risky to try and transplant it into the Divas division. Unless AJ meets someone to get a huge rub from beating her (say Sara Del Rey?), it feels like too risky. AJ’s character overshadowing the Divas title, that being the risk. Her character wasn’t born from the division, and reached heights that might be too lofty. I’m only conjecturing and speculating, but just because AJ’s the most over female character (key word, “character”), doesn’t mean she should be a female title holder. That would entail wrestling more actively, and AJ hasn’t done that. Eve though has, and she would still answer to Booker T. With Eve, she’d push her weight around, but bring out Booker T in a Divas segment, things get more serious. AJ? Answers to nobody and is seemingly going to a feud with Vickie Guerrero of all people.
